Paul Scholes is widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted and intelligent midfielders of his generation — a Manchester United and England legend whose understated brilliance defined an era. Born in Salford in 1974, Scholes joined United’s youth system as part of the famed “Class of ’92” alongside David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, and the Neville brothers, and went on to become one of the club’s most influential and decorated players.
Standing just 5’7” but possessing exceptional vision, technique, and timing, Scholes was the heartbeat of Manchester United’s midfield for nearly two decades. He combined a fierce competitive streak with sublime passing, an uncanny ability to find space, and one of the most powerful and accurate shots in football. His trademark long-range goals — often struck with devastating precision — became a defining feature of United’s attacking play.
Over the course of his career, Scholes made 718 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 155 goals and winning 25 major trophies, including 11 Premier League titles, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 3 FA Cups, and 2 League Cups. Sir Alex Ferguson described him as “the complete footballer,” while many of his peers — including Xavi, Zidane, and Pirlo — openly praised him as one of the best midfielders they ever faced.
Though his international career with England was somewhat limited by tactical choices and competition for places, Scholes earned 66 caps, featuring in major tournaments from 1998 to 2004. He retired from international duty early, preferring to focus on his club, but his influence on English football was profound.
After a brief retirement in 2011, Scholes made a sensational comeback midway through the 2011–12 season, immediately re-establishing control of United’s midfield as if he’d never been away. He retired for good in 2013, bowing out as one of the most technically complete and quietly iconic figures in the modern game.
