Dickie Bird - Legendary England Cricket Umpire - A0, A1, A2 or A3 Prints
Cricket Umpire & Former Cricketer
Harold “Dickie” Bird is one of the most beloved figures in cricket — a man whose integrity, humour, and unmistakable Yorkshire spirit made him a household name far beyond the boundary rope. Born in Barnsley in 1933, Bird’s early dreams were of a professional football career, and he even had trials with Barnsley and Leeds United before fate steered him towards cricket. He went on to play as a batsman for Yorkshire and Leicestershire in the 1950s and 60s, but it was as an umpire that he found lasting fame.
After retiring as a player, Bird took up umpiring in 1970, beginning a second career that would span nearly three decades and redefine the role. Renowned for his fairness, decisiveness, and gentle eccentricity, he became a reassuring constant in an era of immense change within the game. His combination of sharp judgement and good humour made him trusted by players and fans alike — and, at times, almost as popular as the cricketers themselves.
Bird stood in 66 Test matches and 69 One-Day Internationals, including three consecutive World Cup finals (1975, 1979, 1983) — a record that underlined the respect he commanded internationally. His manner on the field mixed the traditional and the human; he was known for his meticulous concentration but also for light-hearted exchanges that reminded everyone cricket was, after all, a game to be enjoyed.
Off the field, Bird became a national treasure. His autobiography, My Autobiography, was one of the best-selling sports books of all time, and his later memoirs continued to capture his blend of honesty and humour. He was appointed MBE in 1986 and OBE in 2012 for services to cricket and charity, reflecting his contribution to the sport’s reputation and spirit. Even long after retiring from umpiring in 1996, Bird remained an enduring ambassador for the values that define cricket at its best — fairness, respect, and the love of the game.
Though he umpired some of cricket’s greatest players — from Viv Richards and Ian Botham to Sachin Tendulkar — Dickie Bird’s own name became synonymous with cricket itself. His distinctive white hat and raised finger are immortal images of the sport’s golden age.
Dickie Bird is regarded as one of the finest umpires in cricket history — a man who combined professionalism with personality and helped define the spirit of the modern game through fairness, warmth, and quiet authority.
