Regular price £9.99

Our Politics Series of designs feature a range of significant figures from the world of politics with a range of views. We only produce them, you can vote for and agree with whoever you wish or not. They are heroes and villains to someone.

John Healey has spent nearly three decades establishing himself as one of Labour's most experienced and dependable political operators. First elected to Parliament in 1997, the Yorkshire MP served in several ministerial positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown before becoming Defence Secretary following Labour's return to power in 2024. Supporters admire his seriousness, attention to detail and reputation for putting public service ahead of political theatrics. Unlike some Westminster colleagues, Healey has generally preferred mastering a ministerial brief to mastering the art of appearing on television.

However, his reputation for quiet dependability took a dramatic turn in June 2026 when he resigned as Defence Secretary in protest at Keir Starmer's government's failure to commit sufficient resources to Britain's armed forces. Warning that defence investment was falling dangerously short amid growing international threats, Healey walked away from one of the country's most important offices rather than accept spending plans he believed were inadequate. Admirers praised a rare display of ministerial principle, while critics questioned whether his resignation reflected genuine conviction or the growing political turmoil surrounding Starmer's leadership.

Then came an extraordinary Westminster plot twist. Following Starmer's departure and Andy Burnham's arrival in Downing Street, Healey was unexpectedly appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in July 2026. Having resigned because the Treasury wouldn't provide enough money for defence, he suddenly found himself running the very department responsible for deciding where the money goes. Westminster irony rarely gets much better.

His new responsibilities are hardly enviable. With inflation, borrowing costs, stretched public services and demands for increased defence spending placing enormous pressure on government finances, Healey faces difficult decisions over taxation, spending and economic growth. Critics question whether Labour can reconcile its ambitious promises with the financial realities confronting the Treasury, while supporters hope his experience and pragmatic approach will bring some much-needed stability.

The irony of his position has become particularly apparent as his former defence colleagues continue demanding the additional military investment that prompted his resignation in the first place. Finding the money, it seems, is considerably more complicated when you're the person holding the chequebook.

Principled political heavyweight or remarkably fortunate survivor of Westminster's latest upheaval? Steady economic hand or Chancellor about to discover that Treasury arithmetic is considerably less forgiving than opposition speeches? Whatever your opinion, John Healey has enjoyed one of British politics' most unexpected promotions—going from resigning over the government's refusal to spend enough money to becoming the man who must explain why there isn't enough to go around.
