Iconic image of Mark Crossley aka Big Norm - jigsaw or Shithouse by Cloughy the former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, penalty stopper and City Ground legend.

Mark “Big Norm” Crossley is a former Welsh international goalkeeper best remembered for his long and distinguished spell at Nottingham Forest, where he became a cult hero and one of the most dependable figures between the posts during the late Brian Clough era. Born in Barnsley in 1969, Crossley joined Forest as a teenager and made his first-team debut in 1988. He would go on to spend more than a decade at the City Ground, making over 300 appearances in all competitions.

Crossley was known for his commanding presence, sharp reflexes, and larger-than-life personality — traits that made him a favourite among both teammates and fans. Under Clough and later Frank Clark, he helped Forest secure promotion back to the Premier League and reach the 1991 FA Cup Final. He also played in numerous European matches during Forest’s successful early-90s runs.

Perhaps his most famous moment came in 1990 when he became the only goalkeeper ever to save a penalty from Peter Shilton in a competitive match, and he’s also one of the few keepers to have saved a Premier League penalty from a certain Matt Le Tissier, who only missed one in his entire career.

Internationally, Crossley represented Wales despite being born in England, earning eight caps. After leaving Forest in 2000, he went on to play for Middlesbrough, Fulham, and Sheffield Wednesday, continuing to display the same professionalism and humour that defined his career.

Since retiring, Crossley has worked as a coach and become a popular media figure, known for his down-to-earth personality and continued affection for Nottingham Forest, where he is still warmly regarded by the club’s supporters.

Mark Crossley epitomised the loyal, big-hearted player every club dreams of having — talented, passionate, and full of character. His decade at Forest saw him become a true fans’ favourite, a link to the Clough era, and one of the club’s most memorable modern goalkeepers.
