Oliver Glasner – The Austrian With a Point to Prove
European trophy winner, tactical perfectionist and a manager with an impressive record of transforming ambitious clubs into serious contenders, Oliver Glasner arrived at Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2026 with a formidable reputation and considerable expectations.
Born in Salzburg, Austria, in 1974, Glasner enjoyed a lengthy playing career before establishing himself as one of European football's most respected coaches.
His managerial rise began in Austria, where he transformed LASK into a formidable force, before successful spells in Germany with Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
At Frankfurt, Glasner achieved something extraordinary, guiding the club to UEFA Europa League glory in 2022, defeating Rangers in a dramatic final in Seville. It was a triumph built on tactical discipline, collective determination and an ability to inspire players to exceed expectations.
His reputation grew further at Crystal Palace, where he delivered historic success, winning the FA Cup in 2025 and following it with European silverware in 2026. His achievements at Selhurst Park demonstrated an ability to build winning teams without the financial resources of football's traditional superpowers.
When Nottingham Forest came calling in July 2026, Glasner inherited a club of enormous ambition but considerable instability, following a turbulent succession of managerial changes.
Unfortunately, his opening months at the City Ground have proved frustrating.
Despite encouraging performances, impressive underlying statistics and occasional glimpses of the attacking football he wants to establish, results have stubbornly refused to follow. A disappointing run of defeats, a shortage of goals and Forest's uncomfortable position near the foot of the Premier League have tested the patience of supporters.
But Glasner has been here before.
His successful spells at Frankfurt and Palace also began slowly, before his methods took hold and silverware followed. His demanding tactical system requires discipline, understanding and complete commitment from his players.
Following another disappointing defeat at Brentford in October, Glasner made his determination unmistakably clear, accepting responsibility for the results while promising a tougher approach and significant changes to reverse the club's fortunes.
There is no shortage of passion, experience or ambition. The challenge now is converting encouraging performances into victories and restoring the confidence of the City Ground faithful.
Nottingham Forest supporters know that great achievements rarely come without adversity. Oliver Glasner has the pedigree, the determination and the European trophies to suggest he can build something special. The difficult beginning is undeniable — but the next chapter remains his to write. Come on you Reds!
