Ron Mael is one of pop music’s great originals: songwriter, keyboard player, musical mastermind and one half of the endlessly inventive Sparks. For more than five decades, alongside his younger brother Russell, Ron has helped create a body of work quite unlike anybody else’s — intelligent, eccentric, theatrical, funny and forever refusing to stand still.
Behind the famously stern expression and unmistakable moustache lies a songwriter of extraordinary imagination. From the operatic brilliance of This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us through The Number One Song in Heaven, When Do I Get to Sing “My Way” and countless adventures beyond, Ron’s melodies, arrangements and wonderfully witty lyrics have made Sparks one of the most influential cult bands in music.
Then, of course, there’s the dancing.
For much of a Sparks performance Ron can appear magnificently motionless behind his keyboard, observing proceedings with trademark deadpan intensity. But when he ventures centre stage for his celebrated dance, everything changes. Arms swing, legs kick and the seemingly immovable Ron Mael suddenly becomes one of the most joyous sights in live music — a wonderfully eccentric tradition that Sparks audiences absolutely adore.
This print celebrates Ron doing exactly that, released on 12 August 2026 to mark his 81st birthday.
Still creating, performing and confounding expectations after more than half a century, Ron Mael remains proof that originality has no age limit. Composer, comedian, showman and pop visionary — at 81, he’s still dancing entirely to his own tune.
