Born in Linz, Austria, Schlager developed through the Red Bull Salzburg system, winning four Austrian Bundesliga titles before establishing himself in Germany with Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig. His impressive Bundesliga career included success in the German Cup, while his energetic performances and leadership qualities saw him become vice-captain at Leipzig.

His arrival at Forest on a two-year contract represented an excellent piece of business, bringing an experienced international midfielder to Nottingham on a free transfer. Crucially, Schlager already knew Glasner's methods from their successful time together at Wolfsburg, giving Forest a player familiar with the manager's demanding, high-intensity approach.
